Every Belgian surfer or kitesurfer knows that very specific moment: you come out of the water, the wind picks up, your fingers don't respond anymore, and you still have to peel off the wetsuit and find dry shorts in the car park. The surf poncho exists exactly for that. It's the accessory that turns a freezing changing routine into something almost pleasant.

What's a surf poncho actually for?

A surf poncho — also called a changing robe — is a large terry-cotton cape with a hood, no sleeves, slipped on over the wetsuit or directly over the body. Three main uses:

  • Change in public without exposing anything. The cape falls below the knees and lets you remove the wetsuit and put on dry clothes safely.
  • Dry quickly thanks to the thick terry, with no need for an extra towel.
  • Stay warm right after the session, when the body is most vulnerable to the cold.

On the Belgian coast in particular, where it often rains and the wind shows no mercy, the poncho isn't a gadget. It's the accessory that can determine whether you ride year-round or only in summer.

EL PONCHO — our model

For this category, we've chosen to offer a single model, built to do the job properly: EL PONCHO.

  • Dense terry cotton — absorbs fast, dries well, stays soft wash after wash.
  • Generous hood — actually covers the head, not just the top of the hair.
  • Loose cut, one adult size — designed to slip over a wetsuit or directly over the body.
  • Open short sleeves — arms free underneath to change without struggle.
  • BINDY signature colourway — clean, maritime, easy to spot from across the beach.
Designed in Belgium. Our poncho is drawn in Brussels, built for North Sea conditions and manufactured by our European partners.

Who is it for?

  • Surfers and bodyboarders — the original use, still the main one.
  • Kitesurfers and windsurfers — even more useful given the time spent on the beach rigging up.
  • Wakeboarders, SUPers, paddlers — anywhere you come out of the water wet.
  • Open-water swimmers and cold-water dippers — an ideal companion after a swim.
  • Parents — also handy with kids at the beach, XL style.

Care

Wash at 30°C with a gentle detergent, air-drying preferred. Low-temperature tumble drying is tolerated but air-drying extends the life of the terry.

Frequently asked questions

Does the poncho replace a towel?

Yes, and more conveniently: you dry off while walking, without juggling a towel in one hand and your stuff in the other.

Can you drive with it on?

Ideal on the passenger seat. We don't recommend driving with it on (the loose cut can restrict the shoulders).

Does it fit children?

Older teens, yes (cut is loose). For younger kids, we plan a dedicated version soon.
